ABOUT STS

Founded in 1965, STS FLOORING was based on the premise that distributors need above all else, quality products, immediate service and technical assistance with a personal touch. Today this still stands, as we continually strive for excellence in all we do, dedicated to meeting the needs of our customers and staff.

If you ventured into and around the Chislehurst Caves some 35 years ago, you would have found Stair Tread Supplies or STS as we are known today. John Bird the founder of STS started the Business during 1965 in a lock up garage below the caves and began to grow STS. The company continued to grow until a severe rainstorm flooded the caves and the surrounding area so seriously that the garage was deluged and the stock ruined. We then relocated to the Penge area in 1969 where our Head office was based.

The Company continued to grow during the seventies, enabling STS to merge with Flooring Distributors of Croydon during 1980. John Bird then retired as Executive Director and Ron Eaton took over as Managing Director, with the assistance of co. Directors Clive Kennett and Cliff Wallman. Between this time and the early 1990’s the company’s success continued, though STS went through many changes including a management buyout and the introduction of Frank Le Duc and Laurie Barker as Directors. 

During the late 1990’s Ron, Laurie and Frank retired and Cliff Wallman took over as Managing Director whose job was to establish a new team to take STS Flooring Distributors into the Millennium. Cliff Wallman continues to lead the team with Brian Walters (Sales Director) and Ray Colgate (Operations Director).

Under this leadership the Company expanded its operations North of London with Depots at both Watford and Cambridge where the Company continues to exceed expectations.

 In 2005 we were voted Distributor of the year by the readers of Contract Floors.

In March 2006 plans were underway to relocate Head Office from Penge to Orpington. These plans were brought forward when a serious fire destroyed the Penge warehouse and stock in its entirety. The Company was relocated and operational within one week and went on to have a successful month, an incredible achievement under very difficult circumstances.

January 2008 STS Flooring Distributors Ltd announced the purchase of Bodigian & Co. Ltd of Thame, Oxfordshire.

In summer of 2008 the time came for the company to review the management structure for the ongoing success and the future of the business, the company was able to finance an internal management buyout and the management changes were as follows:

Cliff Wallman held the position of Managing Director for many years but since  his semi retirement Ray had continued this role in his current position; now Cliff stays on as Chairman, Ray Colgate as Managing Director and Stuart Gay as Finance Director.

This was fantastic news for all concerned as it maintained stability and the experience of the existing team to continue the growth of a very successful business. The 2008 trading results in a tough climate were very encouraging and with its recent acquisition of Bodigians, the company should continue to grow and develop the business further. 

Sales Director Brian Walters decided to retire at the end of 2008 and Jim Flockhart took  Brian’s position as of 1st January 2009.

STS has been for many years the largest independent contract distributor in the South East of England. We hold large stocks in our Five Depots of all contract flooring, including all manufacturers’ vinyl sheet and tile products, carpets, wood, laminate together with adhesives and sundries.
